Drug and Alcohol Addiction in Abilene, TX

Abilene, Texas is home to many individuals and families who are impacted in some way by drug and alcohol misuse. Fortunately, people who live in Abilene that need help recovering from a substance use disorder have plenty of options when it comes to finding a nearby treatment center.

Drug overdoses and opioid misuse have been top public health concerns in Abilene in recent years. At the end of May 2021, the Abilene Police Department reported they were investigating cases of suspected drug overdoses that led to the death of 5 adult males between the ages of 21 and 30 in just a period of 6 weeks.1 The police department added that all 5 men had taken a controlled substance in the form of prescription pills but did not disclose the drug names or classifications.1

At the time the report was released, Abilene police were urging local citizens to dispose of any counterfeit prescription drugs at safe drop-off points in the area to prevent any additional overdoses.1

Days later at the beginning of June 2021, another report was released in which specialists from several addiction treatment centers in Abilene said fentanyl use was on the rise.2

According to the specialists, patients who were admitting themselves to local drug and alcohol treatment centers were using heroin and other pills into which fentanyl had been mixed or pressed.2 They added that many of their patients dependent on drugs were unaware they were being exposed to fentanyl.2
