Amarillo, TX Drug and Alcohol Addiction

Drug and Alcohol Addiction in Amarillo, TX

Amarillo is the seat of Potter County and the largest city in the Texas Panhandle. As the 14th-most populous city in the Lone Star State, Amarillo is home to a large percentage of people who need help fighting substance misuse and addiction.

Opioid misuse has been a serious public health concern in Amarillo for many years. In 2018, it was announced that Amarillo was ranked among the top 25 cities in the U.S. for having an opioid abuse problem.1 In the Fall of 2022, opioid misuse remained a public health issue in Amarillo since the number of reports of fentanyl overdose cases had tripled from 2021.2

According to Amarillo’s police department, fentanyl was seized by local enforcement in September 2022 and was disguised as colorful pieces of candy, including gummy bears.2 The report states that the purpose of drugs being made to look like candy was to target children and teenagers.2 A doctor in Amarillo added that nearly all drugs sold on the streets were being laced with fentanyl, including cocaine, methamphetamine, oxycodone, and hydrocodone.2

Fortunately, people in Amarillo with drug use disorders—including that related to alcohol and all other substances—have many options when it comes to choosing an addiction treatment center.

Amarillo, TX Detox and Rehab Availability

Amarillo has 7 addiction treatment centers, which represents about 1.5% of the total number of recovery centers in Texas.3 Three of these facilities offer drug and alcohol detox services, and one facility offers residential rehab programs for those who need live-in care for their substance use disorders.3

Sober living, also known as transitional housing, is offered at one nearby facility and outpatient rehab programs are available at all 7 facilities.3

Behavioral therapies, relapse prevention training, and trauma-related counseling are some of the many therapies offered at drug and alcohol rehab facilities in Amarillo.3 Dual diagnosis therapy for those with both a substance use disorder and mental illness is offered at 6 facilities, and telemedicine services are offered at all 7 facilities.3

Medication-assisted treatment (MAT) for opioid addiction using methadone is offered at one facility, and MAT using buprenorphine is offered at 4 facilities.3 MAT using naltrexone is also offered at 4 facilities, which can be used to treat people with alcohol and/or opioid use disorders.3

Amarillo, TX Drug and Alcohol Support Groups

Alcoholics Anonymous (AA) and Narcotics Anonymous (NA) are well-known drug and alcohol support groups that are anonymous, easily accessible, and free to attend—including in Amarillo.4 Mutual self-help groups such as these provide people in recovery with an opportunity to connect with others who have similar experiences and goals. These support groups have been shown to aid in long-term abstinence from drugs and alcohol.4

There are dozens of AA meetings in Amarillo that take place 7 days a week at various times of the day.5 These meetings are held at several venues across Amarillo, including at 2906 Duniven Circle, 3512 Moss Lane, and 1301 South Taylor Street.5 People in Amarillo who are interested in attending a local AA meeting can view an updated schedule on the official website of the Texas Panhandle AA.5
