Located in northern Orange County, Anaheim, California is the largest city in the county in terms of population. It’s also the home of two major sports teams and the Disneyland resort.
Unfortunately, Anaheim is not immune from the country’s ongoing drug epidemic.  Between 2017 and 2021, Anaheim reported 559 drug and alcohol-related deaths.1County-wide, there were 1,358 drug and alcohol deaths in 2021.1 Almost 750 of those deaths involved opioids.2
In 2021, there were 1,513 emergency department visits related to opioid overdose in Orange County.2 Anaheim Police expressed concern after 4 people died from opioid overdoses within an hour in January 2022.3 Police believed fentanyl, a powerful synthetic opioid, may have been involved.3
Alcohol misuse and drunk driving are also an issue for Anaheim law enforcement. In December 2021, one man was killed, and four others were hurt after a 3-car crash allegedly caused by a drunk driver.4 Less than a year later, an Anaheim man was sentenced to prison for murder after hitting and killing a 6-year-old girl with his car while drunk driving.5 At the time, his blood alcohol level was almost 3 times the legal limit.5
Fortunately, people living in and around Anaheim can find help to treat their addiction, whether it be drug or alcohol misuse.

Once a patient has completed formal addiction treatment, it’s recommended they create an aftercare plan to help them maintain their sobriety. Addiction support groups are often an important component of an aftercare plan.
Addiction support groups come in many forms and can be focused on alcohol, drugs, or other addictions. Each group is a safe space where people who are in recovery can share experiences and coping techniques as well as connect with others who can relate to their journey.
Many support groups are modeled after Alcoholics Anonymous (AA). Anaheim has a wide variety of AA meetings available, including some held exclusively in Spanish. Here is a small selection of what’s offered and when:8
Narcotics Anonymous (NA) is built on the same 12-step principles as AA. NA meetings are also held at the Anaheim Alana Club on the following days:9
People in Anaheim can also find NA meetings at Recovery Road Sundays at 8:30 a.m., Wednesdays at 6 p.m., and Thursdays at 7:30 p.m.9
Support groups are free to attend and are often closed to friends and family. A meeting listed as open does welcome people who are not members.
