Drug and Alcohol Addiction in Boulevard, CA

Boulevard, California is a small community in southeastern San Diego County. It’s considered part of the rural high desert along the border of California and Mexico.

In 2021, Boulevard had an opioid-related overdose death rate of 72.46 per 100,000 residents, the 3rd highest in the county.1 The rate for all drug-related overdose deaths was similar and was the 6th highest in the county.1 When looking at opioid overdose ED visits, the rate in Boulevard was 561.29 per 100,000 residents, the 2nd highest in the county.1

Across San Diego County, 686 people died from an opioid overdose in 2021.1 There were also 1,637 ED visits and 510 hospitalizations involving opioid overdose.1

In 2020, 722 people in San Diego County died with methamphetamine in their system, an increase of 32% over the previous year.2 Reports also showed fentanyl deaths were up 206% in the county between 2019 and 2020.2 Fentanyl is a powerful synthetic opioid 25 to 50 times stronger than heroin.

According to the San Diego County District Attorney’s Office, almost 40 people were killed in 2021 by people driving under the influence of drugs or alcohol.3 That’s an increase from previous years.3
