Cabazon, CA Detox and Rehab Centers

Cabazon, CA, is a small community in Riverside County located west of Palm Springs. Due to its strategic location in the state, Riverside County has become one of the largest drug trafficking routes in the U.S.¹ California is a major entry point for heroin from Mexico and serves as a pipeline that allows the drug to be moved further into the country.²

Despite its small population, Cabazon is familiar with the devastating effects of substance use, particularly opioids. It has a higher rate of opioid-related overdose ED visits than the county overall.³ Cabazon also has the third-highest rate of opioid-related overdose hospitalizations in all of Riverside County.³

Cabazon also has one of the higher rates for all drug-related overdose hospitalizations in Riverside County.³ When it comes to all drug-related overdose deaths, Cabazon has the second-highest rate in the county.³

The data involving alcohol use shows that binge drinking is on the rise in Cabazon.⁴ In 2018, 16.8% of adults in Cabazon reported binge drinking at least once over 30 days.⁴ That number went up to 17.2% in 2019.⁴ The rate is slightly lower than the overall county value of 17.4%.⁴

According to the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration (SAMHSA), of the 18 million people who were considered alcohol dependent in 2013, only a fraction of them received any type of rehabilitative treatment.⁵ Research has shown that medication-assisted treatment is a promising way to reduce alcohol use and encourage sobriety.⁵

California has more people than any other state in the country.⁶ So, it’s not surprising that it also has a large number of treatment facilities available for those dealing with substance use disorders. According to SAMHSA, there are more than 1,500 centers throughout California.⁷ Thirty-seven of those are located within 25 miles of Cabazon.⁸

These treatment facilities offer a variety of approaches, including⁸:

• 24 centers with supervised withdrawal or detox.
• 18 outpatient facilities, which allows a patient to live on their own while receiving treatment.
• 3 hospital inpatient facilities for hospital-based care that is 24/7.
• 22 inpatient/residential centers for longer-term, live-in care.
• 27 facilities that offer treatment that addresses mental health and substance use disorders concurrently.

People who have a substance use disorder are more likely to have a co-occurring mental health diagnosis such as depression, bipolar disorder, post-traumatic stress disorder, anxiety, and ADHD, among others.⁹ For an improved treatment outcome, it’s important to identify the co-occurring disorders and treat both at the same time with the same provider or treatment team in what’s called integrated treatment.¹⁰

Those in the Cabazon community who are seeking help for their substance use disorder can choose from multiple options designed to treat their needs.

Continuing care is often the next step after a patient has completed a more intensive treatment program. It can include a combination of group counseling, individual therapy, or self-help meetings such as support groups. Research shows that support groups such as Alcoholics Anonymous (AA) are more effective than other established continuing care treatments for helping people stay sober.¹¹

While there are no AA or Narcotics Anonymous (NA) meetings located within Cabazon, there are several options available for people less than 2 miles away in the town of Banning.^{12, 13}

Support groups such as NA and AA are some of the most popular forms of ongoing treatment for substance use disorder in the county.¹⁴ Participation can improve the treatment outcomes for people who suffer from alcohol or stimulant use disorder.¹⁴ It can also be effective for those with an opioid use disorder when used with medication-assisted treatment.¹⁴

Both NA and AA encourage participants to make changes to their social network by adding supportive people and removing those who pose a risk to their recovery.¹⁴ They also teach coping skills and help motivate people to want to stay sober.¹⁴
