As one of the largest Marine Corps bases in the U.S., Camp Pendleton, California and its surrounding region are home to many people who need help fighting and recovering from substance misuse and addiction. Camp Pendleton is part of San Diego County, where rates of opioid misuse have been high for several years.
The number of drug overdose deaths in San Diego County rose significantly from 472 in 2019 to 748 in 2020, which was an increase of 58.5%.1 Overdose deaths involving fentanyl nearly tripled from 2019 to 2020 and accounted for 77% of opioid-related deaths in 2020 compared to 45% in 2019.1 During that same time, the number of overdose deaths in the county involving psychostimulants like methamphetamine and cocaine increased by 64%.1
In June 2022, the San Diego Police Department and investigators from the Drug Enforcement Administration’s (DEA’s) Narcotic Task Force worked together to seize approximately 50,000 fake pills containing fentanyl.2 The DEA says it saw nearly a 313% increase in fentanyl seizures in San Diego County from 2019 to 2021 in tandem with the rise in fentanyl-related deaths.2 During that same period, fentanyl-related deaths rose by 441%, from 151 deaths in 2019 to 817 deaths in 2021.2
According to a substance use counselor in San Diego, the number of fentanyl deaths in 2022 is on track to surpass the total number of fentanyl deaths that occurred in 2021.3 More than 800 people died from a fentanyl overdose in San Diego County in 2021, and by the end of June 2022, that number had already been met.3
