Detox Centers in Coronado, California

Coronado is a small beach town in California’s San Diego County. It is surrounded by San Diego Bay on one side and the Pacific Ocean on the other and is located across the bay from downtown San Diego.

Unfortunately, not even an upscale town like Coronado is immune from the country’s ongoing drug epidemic. In 2021, Coronado had an opioid-related overdose death rate of 16.25 per 100,000 residents, which was lower than the county rate of 19.53.¹ In addition, the city had an opioid-related overdose hospitalization rate of 5.97 per 100,000 residents.¹

Fentanyl is one of the synthetic opioids fueling the opioid crisis across the country. In 2021, a San Diego man was indicted for allegedly selling fentanyl to a 15-year-old Coronado High School student, leading to the teen’s death.² Additional drugs are present on the streets of Coronado as well. In 2019, a Coronado police officer stopped an SUV and, during a search of the car, discovered a duffel bag containing 40 pounds of methamphetamine.³

Alcohol misuse has also resulted in tragic consequences in the city. A man was charged with manslaughter and a DUI after crashing his vehicle in Coronado in July 2022, killing 1 of his passengers.⁴ Prosecutors said the man’s blood alcohol level was nearly twice the legal limit.⁴

Thankfully, a Coronado drug and alcohol rehab has the services in place to help people address their substance use disorder and begin working toward sobriety.

People who live in and around Coronado can choose from 50 drug and alcohol rehab facilities within a 10-mile radius.⁵ Comparatively, there are more than 1,700 addiction treatment centers across California.⁶ Coronado has the following treatment modalities available:⁵

• 4 hospital inpatient facilities with around-the-clock care
• 39 rehabs with coordinated care to address co-occurring mental health and substance use disorders
• There are 19 inpatient or residential centers where patients live and work on their recovery
• 35 outpatient centers that allow people to go to work or school and then receive addiction treatment
• 9 detox facilities to help people safely go through the withdrawal process from drugs or alcohol

Detoxification is often the first step in the recovery process. Once all substances have been removed from the body, a patient can transition to formal addiction treatment.

Support groups are utilized in many types of mental and behavioral health treatment, including addiction recovery. Groups are typically guided by a specific peer leader and are meant to complement more formal addiction treatment. A support group provides structure and guidance as members continue their recovery. Benefits can include developing new coping skills and establishing a new sober social network.

Support groups such as Alcoholics Anonymous (AA) and Narcotics Anonymous (NA) are considered 12-Step programs. AA meetings in Coronado are held at noon, Monday through Friday, at 2000 Mullinex Dr.⁷ People who live in the area can also find meetings at 950 Orange Ave., 7 days a week, morning, afternoon, and night.⁷ Coronado NA meetings are held Thursdays at 8 p.m. at 950 Orange Ave.⁸

Meetings that are listed as closed are only available to members, while open meetings can be attended by anyone interested. There are also specific addiction support groups designed for friends and family members of people who have struggled or are struggling with a substance use disorder.
