Downey, CA Detox and Rehab Centers

The city of Downey, California is in the southeastern part of Los Angeles County, roughly 13 miles away from downtown L.A. Like many other cities in L.A. County, Downey has been experiencing high rates of substance misuse—including drug overdoses involving opioids like fentanyl.

The number of fentanyl-related overdose deaths in L.A. County increased by 1,280% from 2016 (109 deaths) to 2021 (1,504 deaths).¹ During that same time, fentanyl-related emergency department visits increased by 308%, and fentanyl-related hospitalizations increased by 98%.¹

In October 2022, Downey city council members released a 6-part plan to combat the flow of fentanyl coming into the city.² Collaborating with local drug agencies, increasing communication with local hospitals, and placing armed police officers at all Downey public high schools were some of the steps made to reduce fentanyl exposure and misuse in Downey.²

Methamphetamine also caused a high number of deaths in L.A. County in 2021. That year, methamphetamine was involved in 1,526 deaths compared with 1,504 involving fentanyl.¹ Of all the deaths in L.A. County involving drugs and alcohol in 2021, methamphetamine was involved in 56%.¹ This illicit stimulant was also one of the top three substances used by people in the county who sought addiction treatment that same year, alongside heroin and alcohol.³

Fortunately, Downey is within 10 miles of 72 substance-use treatment facilities, which is more than 5% of the total number of substance-use treatment centers in California.⁴

Nineteen of the 72 facilities near Downey offer drug and alcohol detoxification services, and 4 facilities offer transitional housing, also known as sober living housing.⁴ Residential rehab programs are offered at 19 facilities, and 24-hour hospital inpatient treatment is offered at 3 facilities.⁴ Twelve treatment centers also offer federally certified opioid treatment programs for people who need help recovering from fentanyl, heroin, and/or opiate misuse.⁴

Alcoholics Anonymous (AA) and Narcotics Anonymous (NA) are drug and alcohol support groups that give people in recovery the opportunity to connect with peers who have similar goals related to achieving long-term abstinence.⁵ AA and NA support groups are free, anonymous, and widely available, and can complement other addiction treatment programs.⁵

Downey has 19 AA meetings that are held 7 days a week at different times and locations.⁶ Many of these meetings are held both in person and virtually.⁶ Some of the top AA meeting spots in Downey are 10544 Downey Avenue and 8441 E.
