In June 2021, the U.S. Coast Guard brought in more than 7,500 pounds of cocaine at Port Everglades in Fort Lauderdale, which was found to have an estimated street value of $143.5 million.⁴ The Coast Guard also reported that several thousand pounds of cocaine were offloaded at Port Everglades earlier that spring, which were also being transported from nearby drug cartels.⁴

Fort Lauderdale is home to an estimated 93 substance abuse and mental health treatment centers.⁵ This makes up approximately 81% of the total number of addiction treatment centers in Broward County.⁵ Additionally, there are nearly 160 healthcare practitioners in Fort Lauderdale that prescribe buprenorphine for the treatment of opioid dependence, which makes up 70% of buprenorphine prescribers in all of Broward County.⁵
