Drug and Alcohol Addiction in Largo, FL

Located in Pinellas County, Largo, FL faces many drug and alcohol abuse problems. According to the Florida Health Department, at least 20.9% of adults are heavy or binge drinkers as of 2019.1 Simultaneously, the number of drug-related accidental deaths in Pinellas County saw a 38% relation to prescription drugs.1 After increasing deaths from prescription drug abuse, the Pinellas County Board of Commissioners enacted a temporary restriction on any new pain management clinics until they approved these facilities.1

Furthermore, Largo, FL, is part of the Tampa, St. Petersburg, Clearwater area where illicit drug abuse involves an average of 13.9% of the population.2 The average rate for marijuana use was 10.1%, and nonmedical prescription-type pain relievers were 4.6% from 2005 to 2010.2 Out of this population, at least 8% aged 12 or older were classified as having substance use disorder.2 Among adults 18 years and older, at least 7.7% experienced a major depressive episode.2 These rates are pretty similar to Florida and the United States.2

As the nation braces for the drug abuse epidemic, states like Florida have started to see improvements, finally achieving the lowest rate of prescriptions provided for every 100 persons.3 In 2018, the state wrote 53.7 opioid prescriptions for every 100 persons, getting close to the U.S. average rate of 51.4 prescriptions.3 As of 2017, Pinellas County has made substantial efforts to reduce accidental drug deaths and the number of youth who report lifetime illicit drug use.4
