Fentanyl is arguably the most dangerous substance to enter the illicit substance market as it’s a synthetic opioid that’s 100 times more potent than morphine.⁶ Just 1 kilogram of the substance has the potential to kill 500,000 people,⁶ and because it’s easy to get and cost-effective, it’s used as a cutting agent to extend the supply of other illicit substances, including cocaine and heroin.⁶
