Drug and Alcohol Addiction in Moapa, Nevada

Moapa, Nevada, is a very small town within the unincorporated Moapa Valley of Clark County and is home to a population of just 710 residents.1 Most residents here own their own homes in this southern Nevada desert and are only about 50 minutes away from metropolitan Las Vegas.

Nevada as a whole sees its fair share of the negative impacts of drug trafficking that continues to grow throughout the United States. Thanks to its “trade route” location covering Interstate 15,2 Clark County and Moapa, Nevada, consequently see the unfortunate result of this drug trafficking, which is a large number of people struggling with substance use disorder.

A recent data report by the CDC shows that Nevada saw a 55% increase in overdose-related deaths between 2019 and 2020 alone.3 With opioids being the primary cause of the increase in substance-related fatalities, the primary age range impacted was between 18 and 24 years old.3

Opioids are characterized as any type of substance that interacts with the opioid receptors in the brain. This would include heroin as well as prescription painkillers. It also includes fentanyl, a synthetic opioid, which has caused a 227% increase in the pattern of overdose incidents during this same time.3

Fentanyl is most commonly mixed with heroin, cocaine, methamphetamine, and MDMA, and is even sold in pill form to mimic that of prescription painkillers.4 It’s also 100 times more potent than morphine, which is what makes even the smallest dose potentially lethal.4

Since 2019, the overdose-related deaths for both people with substance use disorders and people using illicit substances like MDMA recreationally have tripled because of the synthetic opioid.5 In just the first 8 months of 2021, Clark County saw 174 fentanyl-related deaths in residents under the age of 25.5

While the rise in fentanyl use increases the danger of substance use and substance use disorders, it also increases the chances of drug-related crimes. Moapa, Nevada, currently ranks in the 16th percentile for drug-related crimes, meaning that only 16% of the state’s cities are safer.6 In the central neighborhoods of Moapa, the chance of becoming a victim of a drug-related crime is as high as 1 in 106.6
