As the fourth largest city in Nevada, North Las Vegas faces many of the same problems with addiction and substance abuse as Las Vegas and neighboring Clark County cities. Alcohol, methamphetamine, and cocaine are some of the many substances misused in North Las Vegas and Clark County, but opioid addiction tends to be more problematic than other addiction types.1
According to the Southern Nevada Health District, there were 92 fentanyl-related deaths in Clark County between January and May 2021.1 This was a 39% increase in the number of deaths that occurred the previous year during the same period.1 Fentanyl was related to 193 overdose deaths in Clark County in 2020, and to 72 deaths in 2019.1 This synthetic opioid is between 80 and 100 times stronger than morphine, and frequently mixed with other illicit drugs to increase the risk for a drug overdose.1
Prescription opioid misuse is also a serious public health concern in Clark County; in 2016, there were more than 841 opioid prescriptions written for every 1,000 residents.2 In 2016, more than 40% of opioid-related deaths involved prescription painkillers.3 However, despite the number of opioid-related deaths in Clark County, there are more treatment admissions to drug and alcohol rehab centers for amphetamines and methamphetamines than for any other substance.3
There are 30 facilities in North Las Vegas and within a five-mile radius that offer substance abuse and mental health treatment services.4 Outpatient rehab programs are available at all these facilities, with only one facility offering residential and inpatient rehab programs.4
Buprenorphine treatment is widely available in North Las Vegas, which is highly beneficial for those in recovery from opioid use disorder. Buprenorphine can help reduce drug cravings in people who are opioid-dependent. There are 78 buprenorphine practitioners in North Las Vegas and within a five-mile radius.4
North Las Vegas is also home to two opioid treatment programs (OTPs).5 Drug rehab centers that offer OTPs specialize in treatments that involve the use of methadone, buprenorphine, and/or naltrexone—all of which can help people achieve long-term recovery from opioid use disorder. There are another six OTPs in Las Vegas for those who may work or live closer to these locations.5
Support groups like Alcoholics Anonymous (AA) and Narcotics Anonymous (NA) allow people in recovery from substance use disorders to connect with peers who have similar goals and experiences.6 AA and NA meetings are free, anonymous, and widely available, and are located all throughout North Las Vegas and Clark County.
