Drug and Alcohol Addiction in Olive Branch, MS

Olive Branch is a city in DeSoto County, Mississippi, with a population of roughly 39,711 people as of the last census report of 2020.1 According to local news reports, in Mississippi, at least 440 people died from overdoses in 2020.2 Based on these numbers, there is a drug epidemic in Mississippi, but according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), Mississippi drug overdose mortality rate places it in the bottom eight nationally, with a death rate of 13.6.2,3

The local news recently reported that DeSoto County cities would receive money from opioid settlement cases. The county will receive nearly $2 million from a lawsuit settlement against a group of opioid manufacturers.4 Olive Branch, MS, will receive $333,693 to be paid over the next 18 years—that’s a mere $18,538 per year.4

The Mississippi Department of Health (MSDH) lists DeSoto County as one of the top five counties with the most suspected overdose deaths (6%).5 Overall, most overdose-related deaths in Mississippi involve prescription opioids, fentanyl, methamphetamines, and non-opioid prescriptions.5 DeSoto County is also one of the top naloxone administrators, treating at least 459 potential overdoses.5
