Substance use disorders are an important public health concern in Riverview, as they are in many other parts of Florida and the United States.

Alcohol misuse is problematic among Hillsborough County youth as well, which includes youth in Riverview.² In 2020, an estimated 14.5% of local middle school and high school students reported using alcohol at least once during the last 30 days.² Another 6% of Hillsborough County youth reported binge drinking during the last 30 days, and another 15% reported experiencing memory blackouts.²

Riverview and its neighboring cities within a 10-mile radius are home to a total of 16 facilities that offer treatment services for mental health and substance use disorders.³ This makes up nearly 31% of all substance abuse and mental health treatment centers in Hillsborough County.³ Fortunately, the majority of rehab facilities in Hillsborough County are located in Tampa, which is only 15 miles from Riverview.³

There are no dedicated opioid treatment programs (OTPs) in Riverview. However, there are 2 OTPs in Tampa that offer detox and opioid maintenance medications for those with heroin and prescription opioid use disorders.⁴ Additionally, there are 41 buprenorphine practitioners in Riverview who can prescribe this opioid maintenance medication in an outpatient setting to patients with opioid use disorder.³

Self-help support groups like Alcoholics Anonymous (AA) and Narcotics Anonymous (NA) can serve as an effective source of support and encouragement to people in recovery from substance use disorders.⁵ AA and NA should not be used as a substitute for medications and other forms of addiction treatment, but as a source of ongoing support during and after formal treatment.⁵
