Detox Centers in Slocum, Rhode Island

As a small village in North Kingstown, RI, Slocum has many of the same concerns related to substance use and drug overdose as its parent town. Opioid misuse may be the top public health concern in Slocum when it comes to addiction and substance use disorders.

In 2021, North Kingstown experienced a high level of activity related to opioid overdoses.¹ That year, 6 residents in the town died from an opioid overdose, and 26 runs were made by emergency medical services (EMS) to treat people who experienced an opioid overdose.¹ In 2018, there were 29 EMS runs in North Kingstown related to an opioid overdose and 7 overdose deaths among the town’s residents.²

In April 2022, the Rhode Island Department of Health issued an overdose action area response alert for 6 communities, including North Kingstown and Slocum.³ The alert was issued to warn residents of non-fatal opioid overdose activity in the region, given how North Kingstown was over its pre-established opioid overdose threshold of 4 emergency department (ED) reports.³ From March 27 to April 2, there were 6 ED reports in the region that included North Kingstown and Slocum.³

Currently, only 1 addiction treatment center is located near Slocum in North Kingstown, and 2 addiction treatment centers in Exeter are within 5 miles of the village.⁴ The number of drug and alcohol rehab centers near Slocum makes up nearly 6% of the total number of recovery centers in Rhode Island.

The North Kingstown rehab center offers drug and alcohol detox services, residential rehab programs, and dual diagnosis therapy.⁴ It also offers medication-assisted treatment (MAT) for opioid use disorder and a large number of behavioral therapies, including motivational interviewing, relapse prevention, and cognitive-behavioral therapy.⁴

The 2 treatment centers in Exeter also offer drug and alcohol detox services and dual diagnosis therapy for Slocum residents who need help recovering from both a substance use disorder and mental health disorder.⁴

Alcoholics Anonymous (AA) and Narcotics Anonymous (NA) are drug and alcohol support groups for people who have expressed a desire to stop using these substances.⁵ AA and NA give its members the opportunity to connect with peers who have similar goals for staying clean and sober. Their shared experiences serve as a rich source of community support that complements professional addiction treatment programs.⁵

There are 19 AA meetings near Slocum that meet at several churches throughout North Kingstown.⁶ These AA meetings are available 7 days a week in the mornings, afternoons, and evenings.⁶ First Baptist Church at 44 Main Street, United Methodist Church at 450 Boston Neck Road, and St. Paul’s Church at 76 Main Street are the sites of many of these AA meetings.⁶ An updated schedule of these and other AA meetings near Slocum is posted on the official website for Rhode Island Alcoholics Anonymous.⁶

There are 6 NA groups that meet within 10 miles of Slocum in neighboring towns, including East Greenwich, Middletown, and Warwick.⁷ All of these meetings take place in person, though 1 of the Warwick meetings is available for virtual attendance.⁷ People in Slocum who want to attend an NA meeting can review an updated schedule of meetings on the official NA website.⁷
