Drug and Alcohol Addiction in Sparks, Nevada

Sparks, Nevada, is a suburb located just east of the popular gaming city of Reno. More than 108,000 people called Sparks home in 2020, ranking as the fifth-largest city in Nevada when it comes to population.1

Like other communities in Nevada, some Sparks, Nevada residents experience addiction to drugs and alcohol. According to the Nevada Overdose Data to Action (OD2A), deaths due to accidental drug overdose increased by 55 percent between 2019 and 2020.2 The highest increase in overdoses during that time was seen in people under age 25, jumping from just 38 in 2019 to 106 in 2020.2

In Washoe County, where Sparks is located, there were about 11 opioid deaths per 100,000 residents in 2018, which is on par with the state.3 However, in Sparks, there were 17 opioid overdose deaths out of every 100,000 people in 2018.3

Binge drinking in Washoe County is also higher than in the rest of the state.4 The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) defines binge drinking as consuming more than 5 drinks for men and 4 for women within a 2-hour timeframe.5

According to 2017 data from Nevada Tomorrow, 20.5 percent of adults in Washoe County reported binge drinking at least once within the past 30 days.4 That figure is higher than state data, which shows 17.9 percent of adults reported binge drinking.4
