West Greenwich, RI Detox and Rehab Centers

West Greenwich is a town located in the western part of Rhode Island in Kent County. Like many other parts of the Ocean State, West Greenwich continues to cope with public health issues related to drug addiction and overdose cases.

Between 2014 and 2019, there were fewer than 5 opioid overdose death incidents that occurred during each of those years in West Greenwich.¹

In 2021, there was 7 opioid overdose-related emergency medical service runs in West Greenwich.² Yet, the number of drug overdose deaths in the town remained below 5.²

In March 2022, the Rhode Island Department of Health issued an opioid overdose alert for 5 towns, including West Greenwich.³ From March 6 to March 12, fewer than 5 visits were made to emergency department (ED) rooms by people who experienced an opioid overdose in West Greenwich and other towns in its region.³ The public health alert was issued because the weekly threshold for ED visits related to opioid overdose is 2 for the West Greenwich region.³

West Greenwich is near 4 addiction treatment centers—all of which are located within a 10-mile radius of the town.⁴ These treatment centers are in Wyoming, Exeter, and West Warwick.⁴ The number of addiction recovery centers near West Greenwich makes up more than 7% of the total number of treatment facilities in Rhode Island.

Detox services are available at 2 of these facilities for those who need supervised withdrawal from drugs and alcohol.⁴ Residential rehab programs are offered at 3 facilities, hospital inpatient programs at 2 facilities, and outpatient rehab programs at 2 facilities.⁴

All 4 addiction treatment centers offer mental health services for people with co-occurring disorders or a substance use disorder plus a mental illness.⁴ All 4 facilities also offer telemedicine services over the telephone.⁴

Those in West Greenwich who need help recovering from alcohol and/or opioid addiction also have access to medication-assisted treatment (MAT). MAT using methadone is available at 2 facilities for those with opioid use disorder, and MAT using buprenorphine is available at 3 facilities.⁴ MAT using naltrexone is available at 3 facilities.⁴

Alcoholics Anonymous (AA) and Narcotics Anonymous (NA) are peer support groups that have been shown to help people achieve long-term abstinence from drugs and alcohol—especially when used during the earliest stages of recovery.⁵ AA and NA can be used to complement professional treatment and are free and easily accessible—including in West Greenwich.⁵

There are no AA groups that are currently meeting in West Greenwich.
