Although drug and alcohol support groups aren’t a substitute for professional treatment, they’ve been proven to help people complete treatment and remain sober after leaving rehab.6
Support groups help people have a sense of community and the opportunity to discuss related topics in a judgment-free zone.6 While there are many styles of groups, the most popular ones are Alcoholics Anonymous (AA) and Narcotics Anonymous (NA). Both follow the 12-Step model and focus on the idea that addiction is a disease, not a choice.6
