Specialization

  • Medication Assisted Detox

Detox is the process of getting the drugs or alcohol out of the system and treating any uncomfortable withdrawal symptoms that may occur. The amount of time a client remains in our detox varies on a number of factors. These includes the severity of the dependency or addiction, what amounts of certain drugs are in the system, the type of drug and how long it takes to get medically stabilized. Medical detoxification involves administering and prescribing a series of medications to help minimize withdrawal and cravings, and constant assessment from medical professionals.
  • Individual Therapy

This term describes one-on-one therapy, in which a patient and trained counselor, social worker, psychologist or psychiatrist meets privately with a patient to discuss challenges related to lifestyle, work, family and romantic relationships that may have contributed to the development of an addiction.
  • Client & Family Support Groups

Group therapy is a vital component of addiction recovery treatment, considered as important and effective (sometimes even more so) than individual therapy. Benefits include reducing isolation and loneliness and providing the opportunity to learn from others in recovery. In the addiction setting, group therapy is run by trained professionals who guide participants toward a shared goal of recovery.
  • Trauma & Associative Awareness Therapy (AAT)

Associative Awareness Therapy (AAT) uses the brain’s innate ability to adapt to change in a healing way, essentially “retraining” the brain to respond differently to familiar memories of trauma or pain.

Rehabs 360 Guide

ABOUT ANNIE’S HOUSE

Located in Draper, Utah, Annie’s House provides residential treatment for women struggling with substance abuse and co-occurring disorders. It is one of the only 122 (51.9 percent) treatment centers in the state with women-specific programming, and it is exclusively run by women as well. Social detox is included as part of the program, as is lifetime aftercare and alumni support. Annie’s House is one of four facilities operated by Steps Recovery Centers.

TREATMENT & ASSESSMENT

According to the facility’s website, clients of Annie’s House typically remain on site for 30, 60, or 90 days. The center’s programming is founded in 12-step principles and consists of three phases: intervention and social detox; inpatient and wraparound care; and lifetime aftercare and alumni services. During their stay, clients receive individual counseling and participate in group counseling, family therapy, and experiential therapy. Recreational therapy, designed to foster teamwork and build character, is seasonal and includes activities such as hiking, rock climbing, and kayaking.

STAFF CREDENTIALS

Annie’s House maintains a staff-to-client ratio of 1:3. Staff includes a physician, a licensed clinical social worker, clinical mental health counselors, substance use disorder counselors, case managers, and a personal trainer. In fact, 98.8 percent of substance abuse treatment centers in Utah have higher education requirements for staff.

ACCOMMODATIONS & AMENITIES

Annie’s House can accommodate up to 24 residents at a time, providing much availability given that the median number of clients in a residential treatment program at a given time is 18 individuals. Clients sleep in twin beds and typically share bedrooms, though some private rooms are available. Communal areas include a spacious kitchen, recently remodeled bathrooms, a furnished living room, and a sitting room with a fireplace. A covered pavilion serves as a yoga studio, and clients may use the indoor pool during the summer months.

WHAT ALUMNI SAY

To date, Rehabs.com has received survey data from one alum who offered an unwavering recommendation. A.G. provided five-star ratings in most evaluated categories, including the program’s counseling options, treatment effectiveness, and exercise and leisure options. “Great caring staff. Beautiful home… 12 step and spiritually based program where all therapists go above and beyond to prove they care,” she wrote.

Written commentary from three more alumni on Rehabs.com to date was less positive. Former clients Hannah and H.R. both heavily criticized the facility and its programming. Both felt that they were treated poorly, and H.R. critiqued the lack of aftercare as well as the treatment itself, writing, "Twice we just walked down the street picking up garbage because they didn't bother to plan things."

Contrastingly, alumni reviews submitted to third-party sites were overwhelmingly positive. On Google, the facility received an average rating of 4.4 out of five stars, based on feedback from 15 users to date,[1] and on Facebook, 26 reviewers provided a perfect average rating of five out of five stars.[2] Note, the facility can edit its Facebook page, and not all Google and Facebook reviewers identified themselves as alumni. Multiple reviewers described the facility as life-saving and life-changing, highlighting the caring staff and supportive environment. “I have never felt so much love and compassion in a facility before,” C.R., a Google reviewer, wrote. “The house itself is beautiful and homey giving a feeling of comfort and stability, along with the personable staff who genuinely care about your wellbeing,” A.P. mentioned in her five-star Facebook review.

Other former clients praised the program’s comprehensive curriculum and the structure the center provided. “Annie's house offered me a structured and loving environment that after being in treatment several times, made it refreshing to come to,” S.R. commented in a representative Facebook review.

WHAT FRIENDS & FAMILY SAY

J.L., one of the three loved ones polled by Rehabs.com to date, was disappointed by the care their mother received. Feeling that the staff was dishonest, this individual wrote, “We were lied to many times from the admitting people about stupid things like how she can have soda on the weekends to activities that never happen to the insurance covering the entire bill." This loved one additionally noted disapproval with the quality of the 12-Step programming: "you only go through a couple of the steps and they do that so you have to stay longer," J.L. critiqued.

A second loved one listed similar complaints of no "notification to the insurance," poor customer service and low levels of communication, and medication mismanagement. "This place is really saddening and sickening," C.M. added.

Similarly, the third loved one, T.H.S., felt that the center failed to deliver on their promises and lacked communication skills. “Very little communication with family other than at group settings?” she wrote, giving just one star to family programs, but higher, three-star ratings to staff support and counseling options.

The two Facebook reviews submitted by loved ones differed significantly. Yvonne expressed gratitude for daughter’s treatment. “I thought I had lost my daughter but with the help of the amazing staff, I have her back!” she wrote. R.J. also credited the facility with saving his daughter's life, remarking, "The Therapists and Staff are incredible!"[2]

WHAT STAFF SAY

Two Rehabs.com reviewers who (based on the content of their reviews) appear to be current or former employees shared differing perspectives. S.C. provided the center’s treatment effectiveness with five stars and described the facility as “what treatment centers across the world should aspire to be like.” On the contrary, H.E. characterized Annie’s House as “a mess,” writing, “They can't keep their employees and fire anyone that questions their methods. They are rather lax and run by the seat of their pants with most of their therapy."

FINANCING

Though there is no specific information regarding costs on the facility's website, Annie's House accepts multiple insurance plans, including Intermountain Healthcare, Deseret Mutual, PEHP, Select Health, Molina Healthcare, and Wise Networks. Some financial assistance is available.

Hands down the best place I have been to for depression, anxiety, PTSD, and self-harm. The staff are compassionate and empathetic, therapists specialize in this work, and the owners knew me by name and what my situation was. Not only do I have skills that I didn\'t have before, but I was able to practice them while there. This place opened up a real opportunity for growth, self- discovery and healing for me. I am so thankful Annie\'s House exists.

My counselor restored my faith back in men, god, and sobriety. He is the best counselor I have ever had and he has helped me more that 25 years of therapy. Also alot of girls have brought drugs into the house so it needs to be a safer place to get better. The staff is really short handed as well.
