Anorexia
Anorexia Nervosa or Anorexia is an eating disorder characterized by self starvation, restriction of food intake, or calories, and sometimes excessive weight loss. Anorexia is a serious psychological disorder that goes well beyond out-of-control dieting. It is a refusal to maintain a normal body weight for ones height. It is an intense fear of gaining weight or being fat, despites sometimes significant weight loss. Some women cease to have menstrual cycles. Often there is an extreme concern with body weight shape a size. The person with anorexia eating disorder may initially begin dieting to lose weight. Over time, the weight loss becomes an illusion of mastery and control. It can become an obsession and is similar to drug addiction.Bulimia Nervosa Treatment
Bulimia, or bulimia nervosa, is an eating disorder characterized by compulsive, secretive overeating or binging followed by purging through vomiting, or other compensatory behaviors. A person who suffers from Bulimia eating disorder may even purge normal amounts of food with no binging behaviors. Bulimics often abuse laxatives, diet pills and diuretics, or engage in excessive exercise in order to neutralize food intake. Similar to anorexia, bulimia is a psychological illness. Both bulimia and anorexia extend beyond the scope of out-of-control dieting. The cycle of overeating and purging can quickly become an obsession in which one loses control over the behaviors and is unable to stop the cycle.

Jim Gerber, MA, ATR, Ph.DClinical Director & Primary TherapistDr. Gerber earned a Master’s degree in art therapy and counseling at Southern Illinois University, Edwardsville. He earned his Ph.D at Saint Louis University in counseling and family therapy. Dr. Gerber has worked extensively with adults and adolescents in a variety of clinical areas including sexual and marital dysfunction, family therapy, sexual abuse, trauma, and compulsivity. He has published and presented papers on sexual aggression, sexual abuse and trauma. Dr. Gerber has worked at Castlewood since 2000 as a primary therapist and now as the Clinical Director for all St. Louis based facilities.
Nancy Albus, M.Ed., LPCCEO & TherapistMs. Albus earned her Master of Arts degree in Counseling from the University of Missouri-St. Louis. She is a Licensed Professional Counselor and has completed extensive training in eating disorders and Internal Family Systems therapy. In addition to her interest in eating disorders, Ms. Albus works with gender and sexuality issues, and facilitates family week programming at Castlewood. Ms. Albus joined Castlewood in 2002 and has held various positions including primary therapist, Executive Director and now Chief Executive Officer. Ms. Albus is a member of the Academy of Eating Disorders, The International Association of Eating Disorder Professionals and the National Eating Disorder Association.
