Decision Point Center

505 Whipple Street, Prescott, Arizona, 86301
Decision Point takes a contemporary view of addiction as a chronic disease, not a choice. And like any chronic condition, addiction must be managed throughout one’s life. But this does not mean having to live life any less fully or with limitations. On the contrary, we believe that by learning to manage the condition of addiction and its associated disorders, people become better at learning to overcome the many other adversities they will encounter throughout their lives. We believe that treating addiction should be seen as a positive and healthful path of hope and growth.

Specialization

  • 45-Day Residential Treatment Program

Treatment for drug and alcohol abuse in our 45-Day Inpatient Treatment Program involves a combination of behavioral and holistic therapies designed to achieve cessation from alcohol and drugs, an understanding of the causes of the disease of addiction, the ability to identify “triggers” for relapse, and the wherewithal to navigate one’s way back on track by seeking appropriate help should relapse occur. Should the client or the clinicians at Decision Point Center determine that deeper therapeutic work on underlying mental health issues, and/or educational and vocational counseling be of significant benefit to the client, he or she may elect to stay on for our 45-day Extended Residential Treatment Program. All 45-Day Residential Treatment clients live and receive treatment at Decision Point’s Prescott, Arizona treatment center.
  • Extended Treatment Program

In some cases, clients, their families, and the treatment team agree that a longer term stay may be warranted. This is extended period of treatment allows for further stabilization from addictive behaviors and in some cases, more in-depth treatment of mental health and trauma-related issues. However, the 45-Day Extended Treatment Program also provides additional therapies and services focused on each client's individual issues as well as the development of life skills such as money management, banking skills, resume writing and interviewing skills, and educational and vocational consulting, and more. We find that for many clients, addiction and substance use disorder are accompanied by a perceived inability to engage with life on life's own terms. We believe that this perception is due to a lack of emotional maturity and an inability to take responsibility for one’s self and future. The Extended Program gives each client an opportunity to develop these traits, in some cases, for the first time.

ABOUT DECISION POINT CENTER

Set in the Bradshaw Mountains of central Arizona, Decision Point Center provides dual diagnosis treatment for individuals struggling with substance use and co-occurring mental illness or trauma. The Prescott residential rehab center is one of only 5.9 percent of Arizona treatment facilities to provide non-hospital residential detox services. These are followed by an extended assessment program, evidence-based psychotherapy, and outdoor recreational therapies. Having opened in 2002, the facility significantly redesigned its programming in 2016, placing high priority on serving clients in a shame-free environment that supports whole-person recovery.

TREATMENT & ASSESSMENT

The standard 45-day residential program at Decision Point Center begins with a 14-day comprehensive assessment process, according to the facility’s website. Clients in need of immediate physical care can be admitted to the detox program for access to 24/7 medical support during withdrawal from substances including heroin, cocaine, alcohol, and benzodiazepines. Once a client is stabilized, they are typically transitioned into continued residential treatment.

Programming is designed to address each client’s nutritional, medical, psychiatric, psychological, relational, and vocational wellness. In keeping with a therapeutic community recovery model, Decision Point’s introduces recovery support groups involving traditional and newer 12-step principles, such as Alcoholic Anonymous and Celebrate Recovery, and non-12-step approaches, such as SMART Recovery.

Trauma-oriented therapy at Decision Point primarily utilizes eye movement desensitization and reprocessing (EMDR), while cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT) serves as a core modality. Also practiced are motivational interviewing and dialectical behavior therapy (DBT).

Outdoor recreational therapy is a distinctive part of the Decision Point program, too. The center’s location supports hiking, rock-climbing, backpacking, and equine therapy. Alternative activities for residents with physical limitations are provided. For clients participating in long-term programs, up to 90 days, career counseling and financial education are included, designed to address failure-to-launch challenges. Family therapy is encouraged. Case managers assist clients during treatment with legal obligations and family meetings and provide one year of follow-up.

STAFF CREDENTIALS

The treatment team at Decision Point Center includes a certified EMDR therapist, recreational therapists, nursing staff, and master’s-level counselors. Some staff members are in personal recovery. The center is one of the just 20 percent of facilities nationwide to hold Joint Commission credentials.

ACCOMMODATIONS & AMENITIES

Residents at Decision Point Centers live in comfortable, apartment-style spaces in separate women’s and men’s buildings. Website photographs feature multiple outside meeting spaces, shared bedrooms, media rooms, a computer room, and a game room with a pool table.

WHAT ALUMNI SAY

To date, of the 51 alumni reviews received by Rehabs.com for Decision Point Center, 76 percent were strongly favorable and 12 reviews were critical. All feedback was collected within three years of this writing; however, former clients didn’t always indicate whether their treatment experience was before or after the facility’s major programming changes.

Alumni frequently reported the life-saving effects of their treatment, citing ongoing sobriety and application of tools learned. They also complimented staff and the value of outdoor therapy at Decision Point. Eight alumni polled more extensively by Rehabs.com gave positive-leaning, but mixed opinions. The two highest average ratings were for metrics evaluating elements the facility’s website emphasized, while one significant area received a few complaints.

Holistic Offerings: 3.4/5
Cleanliness and Upkeep: 3.4/5
Exercise and Leisure Activities: 2.7/5

Negative trends included representations of the facility as too strict or punitive, insufficient alternatives to 12-step practices, and inadequate individualization of treatment. Note that the center’s CEO addressed these concerns in response to critical reviews, citing significant changes in philosophy and staffing.

Elsewhere, feedback for Decision Point Center trended more solidly positive. On Google, 32 individuals contributed to an average rating of 4.3 out of five stars, and several reviews echoed praise for supportive staff.[1]

Multiple reviewers appreciated the EMDR therapy especially. A few critical reviews duplicated ones on Rehabs.com. The center’s official Facebook page, which its staff may monitor, followed similar trends, with an average of 4.4 out of five stars based on the opinion of 45 people.[2] Yelp reviews fell more in line with Rehabs.com reviews, split two-to-one, positive-to-critical.[3] [4]

WHAT FRIENDS & FAMILY SAY

To date, feedback for the facility from 18 loved ones polled by Rehabs.com was also mixed. Opinions from nine individuals polled more extensively by Rehabs.com agreed with alumni on one area of strength, while offering much lower ratings for other priority areas.

Cleanliness and Upkeep: 4.1/5
Dual Diagnosis Treatment: 2.8/5
Holistic Offerings: 2.4/5

Family members were most satisfied with the staff, though were more critical of the facility's counseling options and level of family participation.

Staff Experience and Training: 4.1/5
Family Participation: 2.8/5
Counseling Options: 2.5/8

Of about half-a-dozen Google reviews by loved ones, all but one were positive, most commonly reporting extra efforts the staff made to make their family members comfortable.

I went to Decision Point Center almost 9 years ago. I had gone to multiple 30 day facilities that didn’t work for me. The long term care and attention to why I used is what worked for me. I just celebrated 8 years sober

Do NOT consider this treatment center. Everyone working here is ex convicts with tattoos and bad attitudes. They are extremely unprofessional. The operational systems are a disaster and living routine is the same as if they just opened, let alone aN operating facility with years of so called experiance.. Give yourself a chance elsewhere. I attended and left after 2 weeks and went to another place in Tucson that was simply amazing.

The program at Decision Point saved my sons life. I am grateful for every person that was involved in his recovery. The program is run by professionals that all have some type of experience with addiction. They truly understand how manipulative an addict can be. Not only do they treat the addiction and teach coping skills they also teach them accountability. I know my son will have a life long challenge to stay clean and sober but Decision Point taught him a lot of coping skills. They also use a therapy called EMDR which my son says helped him the most in dealing with his cravings. In addition to all the therapy he received, they also take them on outings to show them that you can enjoy life with out drugs. They would go on long hikes in the mountains, kayaking, rock climbing and they took 9 of the clients on a camping expedition for 4 days which my son said was the best time he ever had in his life. The strong connections and bonds he made while he was there was a hugh part of his recovery as he had been alienated from all of his friends while on drugs. He graduated 2 weeks ago and has moved on to a sober living home but his attitude is amazing and he says it feels good to have a clear mind again. My son initially wanted to go to a rehab facility that used medication assisted therapy(methadone or suboxone) as he felt he could not be clean with out something but we insisted that he be free of all drugs that would consume his life. He has no cravings at all for any of the drugs he was addicted to. If you are considering going to a treatment facility or looking for a loved one, this is the place you want them to go to. If you or your loved one wants help and are willing then I believe Decision Point can help them. They are strict and have a lot of rules but I think that is what helped my son the most. Being in a safe setting with no temptations. I highly recommend decision point with no hesitation what so ever. My son was in another facility in California 2 months prior and I would say they were enablers. It is very hard to find a good, honest facility that actually wants to help people. Every person at decision point truly cares for their clients. Very experienced in treating drug/alcohol addiction.
